How agriculture businesses in the UK and India can grow with AI, automation and custom software

Direct answer. Agriculture businesses in the UK and India grow with AI, automation and custom software when one field file shows the water status, the input quote and its date, the price the business can actually use, and the name of the person who decided to drill, sow, irrigate, wait or stop, before more cash is spent. Cogitix builds that file beside the records the business already keeps. This article does not invent a yield or a savings percentage, and it is not agronomy, subsidy or tax advice.

The examples are patterns, not client stories. Cogitix is an AI agency that builds software for clients worldwide. It does not choose a crop.

What file is checked before a field is drilled or sown?

A winter cereal block in England and a rabi field in Maharashtra both need a record a later reviewer can reconstruct. That record is still split across a supplier's message, a rainfall memory, last year's rotation, and a spreadsheet last updated in the spring.

The file in this article is small. It covers one field, one salad block, or one poultry house. Before the next spend it stores four things: whether moisture or irrigation is known, the quote for seed, fertiliser, feed or labour and the date of that quote, the price the business can actually use, and the name of the person who decided to go ahead, switch crop, wait, or stop. A usable price is a contract, a published series with a date, or the status "not known". A hoped-for price is not a source. Waiting is an honest status.

Why does a split crop decision hurt?

Cash leaves before anyone can say, for this field, whether water and the price still cover the inputs. On 1 November 2026 FarmingUK reported Defra's agricultural price indices, published on 29 October. In the year to August 2026, input prices rose 8.6% and prices received by farmers fell 5.4%. Plant protection products rose 47.6%, energy and lubricants 23.3%, fertilisers and soil improvers 13%, and straight feedingstuffs 19%. Outputs moved apart: potatoes fell 31.9% and milk 17.3%, while wheat rose 15.6%. The input price index overtook the output index in April. By August it stood at 137.9 against 134.6 for outputs, on a 2020 baseline of 100. The indices are price changes, not one farm's profit, and most input prices remain provisional. A dairy and a wheat block still each need their own quote.

Some of the spend is already lost to weather. On 3 November 2026 Martin Emmett of the NFU described extreme heat, prolonged drought, and a British Leafy Salads Association estimate that around 30 million lettuce heads went unharvested over four weeks, about £10 million. He called water security one of the sector's main issues. The page also records 41,000 Seasonal Worker visas for 2027, a headcount for next year, not a name on this week's cut.

The buy-or-wait call is already happening in public, one thread at a time. Agri Web Media on 11 October 2026 covers 135 Farming Forum contributions from 20 April to 7 May. The page says it is not a survey. One grower was quoted £620 a tonne for urea and could not justify it against grain at £180. Another bought a third of next year's requirement. Another wrote: "I will wait, if there's no margin, I won't be drilling." A 16 September account of a July thread, not a survey, quotes growers asking whether to cut inputs to an average yield. It also reports a declaration that 71.3% of England was in drought, and the October page reports AHDB urea at £483 a tonne in the week ending 2 October. This article opened those Agri Web Media pages, not the notice or the AHDB series.

On 27 July 2026 James Bush at GSC Grays called fertiliser the main factor in autumn drilling, with ammonium nitrate around £530 a tonne and urea above £600 a tonne, adding about £40 to £50 an acre if old rates were kept. Use his method: a gross margin by field, then a stress test.

In India the missing line is often water, plus cash. On 3 November 2026 Reuters, in The Economic Times, quoted Amarsingh Gushinge, 78, at Rajewadi in Jalna: "There's not enough moisture in the soil to sow the next crop, and no money left to do so either." He wanted wheat and chickpeas because prices looked attractive. The report says the local weather office put Jalna about 48% below average rain, and that wheat was at a nearly two-year high. The same piece quotes Uday Singh Bayas of IPEMA-Poultry India that feed is 60% to 70% of poultry cost, and Uddhav Ahire of Anand Agro Group that the higher feed cost had not been fully passed on. A higher grocery price is not, by itself, the farm's price.

On 29 September 2026 The Hindu reported a 2026-27 foodgrain target of 373.93 million tonnes and a rabi target of 177.72 million tonnes. Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan put the rainfall deficit near 12%, said fertiliser was available, and said water-intensive crops should give way to pulses and oilseeds where moisture is low. Down To Earth adds district water budgets and an IIT Gandhinagar reading of about 52.5% of India's area dry or in drought on 16 September. The file is how one holding applies that to one field.

Where should a farm business start?

Keep the accounts package, the agronomist's notebook and the person who may spend. Add one record for one queue: a wheat block still not drilled, a salad block that may need another cut, a rabi field where wheat and a pulse are both still possible, or the next feed order for one poultry house. Each line has a source, a date, and a status of known, quoted, not known or waiting. That is where digital transformation consulting should start.

How do four steps put the field on one record?

1. Write the field once

Store the block, the crop being considered, the moisture or irrigation note, the quote and who gave it, and the price source. If moisture was not measured, store "not measured". If the only price is a memory of last harvest, store "not known". Capture the quote with custom web development or a mobile app the person already opens, so a supplier message does not stay on a personal phone.

2. Ask the person who knows

A drafted comparison may set this week's quote beside the price source and the water status. The draft stays a draft until a person accepts it. Software must not place a fertiliser order, invent a yield, or treat a forum price or a grocery price as this business's price. That limit is AI agent integration, as described for autonomous agents.

3. A person accepts the field before money moves

A model may line up the index, the quote and the water status. A person chooses drill, sow a different crop, irrigate, wait or stop. Software can hold the next purchase while moisture is unknown, the only price is undated, or nobody has signed the line.

4. Keep one pack a person has read

The pack is the quote, the water note, the usable price, and the name. For a UK block, rebuild the field gross margin GSC Grays described in July on this week's quote. For an Indian rabi field, set moisture and cash beside the crop that can actually be sown, including a pulse or oilseed where wheat will not establish. The waiting note is the same job as answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation. Several holdings on one history is cloud-based SaaS. A workflow other farms will run is end-to-end product development.

What is different for UK farms and growers?

Store the commodity and the date. Wheat was up on the year to August while milk and potatoes were down, so one farmgate price for the whole business points two enterprises the wrong way. For a salad block, put water and hired labour on the same line as the quote before the gang is booked. A scheme option, where the business is weighing one, is a named status with a date and a person. Software does not submit the form.

Produce that leaves the farm meets the logistics guide. The price a shop or a kitchen will pay meets the retail guide and the hospitality guide.

What is different in India?

A national deficit of about 12%, and a statement that fertiliser is available, does not close a field in Jalna with a reported 48% rainfall gap and no cash to sow. Record moisture or "not measured", the quote, and whether money is still there. The Hindu and Down To Earth both record the steer toward pulses and oilseeds where water is short, and Down To Earth records district water budgets. On 4 November 2026 the campaign window that page describes, through 30 November, is still open. The file does not replace the district plan and it does not file the return. It holds this field, this quote, this person.

For a poultry house, start with the feed order and store the bird price the business can use today. A chat price can sit in the note. It cannot be the only source. The same human check is in how to improve workflows using AI.

Should you buy, configure, or build?

Buy or configure when the product already stores the field, the dated quote, the water status, the price source and the person who accepted the spend, and can hold the next order while a status is waiting. Build when one business must hold a UK cereal block and an Indian rabi field, or a salad block and a poultry house, on the same history, when a supplier message has to land on the field, or when the accounts export cannot show why this field was drilled. A person at the business still decides. Cogitix does not buy the urea and does not submit a scheme form.

What does a 90-day pilot include?

Days 1 to 15. One queue. List the fields or the house, who may see prices and quotes, and the rollback.

Days 16 to 45. One team. The next spend proceeds only after a person accepts the line. A supplier order goes out only after a person sends it.

Days 46 to 75. Recount what is still waiting: no moisture or irrigation note, a quote with no date, a price marked "not known", or a decision with no name. This guide has no benchmark percentage.

Days 76 to 90. Add a second queue on its own file, or stop.

Human checkpoint before a farm spend goes ahead Four boxes: the dated quote and the water status, a software draft that is not the decision, a person who accepts or returns it, and the spend, which proceeds only after that check. Quote and water dated, or waiting Software draft not the decision Person accepts Spend proceeds after the check
A drafted comparison, a suggested rate, or a guessed yield stays a draft until a person accepts it.

Questions about agriculture software with Cogitix

What is Cogitix?

Cogitix, short for Cogitix Tech Solutions, is an AI agency. It builds AI agents, AI automation and AI-powered custom software, and it delivers working software quickly for clients worldwide. The canonical website is https://www.cogitix.io/. The cogitix.in domain is an alias of the same site. The public email is hello@cogitix.io.

What should a UK farm record before it drills or buys more fertiliser?

FarmingUK on 1 November 2026 reported Defra's agricultural price indices, published on 29 October: in the year to August 2026, input prices rose 8.6% and prices received by farmers fell 5.4%, and the input index has been above the output index since April. On 27 July 2026 James Bush at GSC Grays said autumn drilling should follow a field-by-field gross margin, using current fertiliser and fuel prices, with a stress test for a lower yield, a higher cost and a softer price. Agri Web Media's 11 October account of a Farming Forum thread, which the page says is not a survey, quotes growers setting a urea quote against a grain price and buying only part of the next requirement, or waiting. Record the field, the dated quote, the price the business can use or the status "not known", the water status, and the person who accepts the spend. This is a reading of those pages, not agronomy advice, and the July prices are not a November price list.

What should an Indian farm record before it sows a rabi crop?

A Reuters report published by The Economic Times on 3 November 2026 quotes Amarsingh Gushinge at Rajewadi in Jalna: there was not enough moisture to sow the next crop, and no money left to do so. The report says the local weather office put Jalna's rainfall at about 48% less than average this year. On 29 September 2026 The Hindu reported a 2026-27 foodgrain target of 373.93 million tonnes and a rabi target of 177.72 million tonnes, and quoted Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on avoiding water-intensive crops where rainfall, reservoirs and soil moisture are low. Down To Earth on 30 September reported district rabi plans based on a water budget. Record moisture or "not measured", the quote, whether cash is still available, the crop being considered, and the person who accepts sowing or waiting. This is a reading of those pages, not agronomy advice.

When is custom crop-decision software a better fit than a spreadsheet and a supplier message?

Custom software fits when the same business must hold a UK cereal block and an Indian rabi field, or a salad block and a poultry house, when a quote sent to a personal phone has to land on the field, or when the accounts export cannot show why this field was drilled. A spreadsheet and a supplier message are enough only while one person can still name the field, the quote and the status without opening every thread. Cogitix builds the record beside the accounts. It does not place the order, and it does not decide the crop.

What should a 90-day agriculture pilot include?

One queue, one team, a rollback, and a human checkpoint before the next spend and before any supplier order is sent. Recount lines with no moisture or irrigation note, quotes with no date, prices marked not known, and decisions with no name. At day 90, add a second queue on its own file, or stop. Cogitix does not publish a standard savings percentage, because that number would not describe your fields.

Does Cogitix give agronomy advice, or publish a phone number or a street address?

Cogitix does not give agronomy, subsidy or tax advice, and it does not buy inputs or choose crops for a farm. The site publishes the email hello@cogitix.io and hours of Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. A telephone number and a street address are not listed. Cogitix serves clients worldwide.
